5 Tips for a Great Headshot

You've been putting off getting your headshot updated, but now you are ready to finally take the plunge. So... Let's help you get your best self out there.

1-Find the right photographer

First, find a photographer who specializes in headshots. Yes your friend or spouse CAN take your photo, but that doesn't mean they SHOULD be your go to person. And sure, there are lots of photographers out there who may take some nice photos, but you want someone who specializes in headshots.

A photographer who specializes in headshots is someone who is consistent in how their photos turn out. Take a look through their HEADSHOT portfolio. Headshot photographers are experts at getting great expressions, even for people who don't think they are photogenic. They know the right angles, use professional lighting, and how to pose you so you will look amazing.

I know it is an investment, but remember you will be using these images in your social media, email signature, website, and all things for your business for the next few years. So make sure you invest with someone who is an expert at headshots and can produce the professional photos you need.

2-What to Wear

Like most people, you may be wondering what to wear for your headshot session. Don't worry, I've got you covered.

Solids photograph best. This is not the time for your favorite band t-shirt. Or anything with a logo or writing. Now don't get me wrong, you've gotta love your favorite t-shirt, but this is not that time. So stick to solids. A very subtle pattern sometimes will work for your portrait. But nothing too bold. Also layering often looks great.

Unfortunately, bare arms do not tend to photograph well, so I always recommend you wear sleeves at least to your elbows. I know there are super cute summer dresses you love to wear, just make sure to wear a cardigan for your portrait. Or choose something else for this occasion.

As far as what color to wear, I usually recommend a color you love on yourself. You know what looks good on you, so trust that. Also, I tell my clients to bring in a few things if they want and I'm happy to help them choose.

If you want to wear jewelry, keep is classic and simple. You don't want anything in your portrait to distract from your face.

3-Makeup tips

If you are wondering about makeup, let's chat about that. There are a couple of options. You can go with a make up artist if you would like. They can be a wonderful option. Or you can do it yourself.

I always recommend to keep your makeup close to how you usually wear it, whether you do it yourself or have someone else do it. You want your headshot to look like you.

So again, keep it simple and classic and what you feel comfortable with. When you look at your portrait you want to say, "Wow! That's a great photo of me!" not "Who is that person, I've never seen her before in my life."

4-Hair tips

Okay your hair. What to do with your hair?

If you need a hair cut, get that about a week before your portrait session. You want to grow into the cut a little.

And if you want to color your hair, I also recommend doing that at least a week ahead of your session so you are satisfied with the outcome. I have had several clients have to reschedule at the last minute because their stylist didn't do so great with coloring their hair. We'll just leave it at that for now :)

For styling, I recommend you go with a style you are already familiar with. Now is not the time to experiment. Be your beautiful self.  

5-Nails

Even if you don't think your nails will be in the photo, go ahead and trim them, paint them, or have them professionally done if that is something you prefer. Whatever you are comfortable with, just make sure they are tidied up in case we want to photograph them as well.
